"Nazi Wizards, Prostitute Fairies and Kung Fu Elves" - a review by timchuma

For a change I think that if you've read the tagline above, you've already made up your mind if you actually want to see this movie, but it is probably weirder than you could possibly imagine.

10,000,000 years after the nuclear war, mankind evolves into two distinct races, those who live in the good lands where the sunlight comes through (it came back after 2,000,000 years) and have evolved into elves, fairies and other good folk, and those who live in the shadow lands where people still die of radiation, who have changed into trolls, orcs and other nasty creatures.

To a mother in the good lands, a set of twins is born after a storm and they are both wizards, one is good and the other evil. Naturally they have a face of and the good one wins (for now) and 3000 years later the story continues with the good twin (Avatar) being an advisor to the president of the good lands and the bad twin (Blackwolf) being ruler of all the evil lands.

Blackwolf begins sending assassins out to kill all the ‘believers in magic’ as he wants technology to rule. After a successful attempt on the president that Avatar was meant to be guarding, the old wizard sets out to stop him, with two companions, a kung fu elf and a fairy in training who wears a white bikini for the entire movie.

However, Blackwolf has a secret weapon in his war against magic, to help his army defeat the magic users, he has dug up (literally) an old projector (which is powered by a fairy) which shows Nazi propaganda movies (complete with Hitler) to scare the enemy into submission. (I'll think I'll leave it there!)

The director, Ralph Bakshi, is well known as the idiot who butchered The Lord of The Rings when he tried to compress two books into one movie: he is better here by a long shot.

This movie is so completely off the wall and unexpected that it is hard to describe it properly. It is also a mistake that it is in the kids cartoon section of the video store, as it contains elements that are fairly worrying actually.

Probably my favourite thing about this movie was the fact that it has a preview for Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980) on video (yes it is very old) but I know that doesn't count!

My second most favourite part was this:

(two soldiers in radiation suits, one is on the ground)
1st Soldier
They killed Fritz! They killed Fritz! Those dirty yellow elves killed Fritz! (laser fire)
No. I'm not dead!
1st Soldier
Why are you always doing that? Stepping on my best lines! (accidentally shoots Fritz)
They killed Fritz! They killed Fritz! Those dirty yellow elves killed Fritz! (laser fire)

(It's funnier in the movie, trust me.)

I would probably recommend that you were not sober when watching this film as it is hard to comprehend at the best of times (you'll have more fun too.) It would probably make it easier to understand some of the animation too, which is not all animation, some of it just overlays of the same soldiers over and over again. (Soldiers in Nazi uniform with horns growing out of their helmets, knights in armour and Zulu tribesmen).

timchuma gives this movie 7 out of 10.

  1. Great movie. Saw it on the Sci-Fi channel back when they were doing the 'Saturday Anmie' bit. Just bought the DVD. Every bit as good as I remebered it.

  4. This is one of my favorite films from my youth. Mr. Bakshi did an excellent job incorporating adult themes into this film without losing the child-like essence of fantasy.

If I won 13 Best Achievement in Cinematography Oscars but Jack Palance accidentally read out Marisa Tomei's name when I won 4 of those Best Achievement in Cinematography Oscars, how many Best Achievement in Cinematography Oscars did I actually take home?
