"An Australian Rock Classic" - a review by timchuma

I first heard of this movie when I heard friends talking about it at Uni. What I remembered most about the conversation was how difficult they said it was to rent at the video store (some places charged an extra deposit to rent it.) Also some people liked the movie so much they actually went to find the house in Richmond where it was set (I did the same with a friend for the house from The Castle (1997).)

Even though this movie was made in the 1980s it is still the favourite of a lot of people. I remember hearing Saskia Post being interviewed on the radio and she mentioned she still gets asked questions by people about what it was like to star with Michael Hutchence.

What is special about this movie is that it really feels more like visiting a friend's house than just watching a film. Although I am too young to remember much about the time period it is set in - 1978 - the way they show it is just like being there.

Everyone has a favourite character from this movie, and mine would have to be Chuck - "How's it going you hippy bastards!" Lucio also reminds me a lot of myself when I was going to Uni (he is the butt of a many jokes.)

Anna (Saskia Post) and Sam (Michael Hutchence) make a very believable couple. Even though the story mainly concerns them, you can get just as much out of the other characters.

I also liked how the only TV shows they seemed to watch are old documentaries on space exploration, Thunderbirds and Countdown.

Another thing you can take from this movie is some great dialogue. Some scenes are hard to watch at first as in the party scenes there are heaps of overlapping lines, but you can get more out of it when you watch it again.

This movie is rated R as the OFLC thinks it shows a "degenerate lifestyle", but don't let that put you off. There are drug references in it, but they are much less graphic than other movies (such as another Australian movie, Pure Shit (1976), which this movie reminds me of.)

I don't know if this movie is out on DVD yet, but I would recommend buying this movie even if you can only find it on video. It's a film that you can put away and then watch when you feel like hanging out with some friends.

timchuma gives this movie 8 out of 10.

  7. Agree with everyone, a favourite of my youth. Classic thing about this film is the background comments from various cast members out of shot. eg When Sam is asked if he comes from the planet poofta or the planet stupida, you'll hear Tony yell out "Think carefully before answering Sammy!" Once your awake to that, you'll hear them all through the movie!

"Hey! Dog face! Show us your snatch!"
