"It certainly is" - a review by pearly

Aaah, the animated short documentary, that favourite of film genres.

In It's Like That, 3 (anonymous) children currently being held in an Australian Immigration Detention Centre speak about their experiences of life in these circumstances. These conversations were recorded via telephone, and form the basis of the film. Laid over the top of these voices are many different styles of animation (you can tell that the director is a group, rather than a single person). The main styles are pencil drawings and a group of knitted birds who mime the words being spoken by the children.

The film is a bit of a commentary on the state of the laws regarding refugees in Australia, but done in a fairly innocuous way, so that without the title screens at the beginning and end, the meaning would not necessarily become clear. At the film's completion, it states that upon completion of the film, the children were all still in detention.

I liked this unique animation style, with the differing styles helping to keep the piece fresh, even though it's only a bit over 7 minutes in length. It seems just like the style that would be produced from what I envisage a team called Southern Ladies Animation Group (S.L.A.G.) to create. Interesting, topical, very now.

pearly gives this movie 7 out of 10.
