"The title gives away the ending!!!" - a review by andy-j

Look, I admire director Guy Maddin's ability to work in numerous variations on the whole premise of slapping in a single four-minute film. Really, I do. But it just isn't enough for me, someone who has been spoilt with luxuries such as 'plot', 'characters', 'colour photography' and 'point'. This review is as ridiculous as the short film that is its subject.

andy-j gives this movie 3 out of 10.

"We are not amused" - a review by pearly

Apparently, with this film, director Guy Maddin is taking a dig at the early avant-garde films in a humorous fashion. Well, I'm not sure about that. To me, it was basically just four minutes of guys slapping each other's bare skin, building and building to its climactic (or anti-) ending.

Its style is that of a 1930's film, and it begins with appropriate olde style music and a title screen evoking this theme, but as it progresses, the whole thing becomes less adherent to this style, including the music, which almost turns towards a techno vibe.

As a basis for comedy, it is most certainly not my thing - in fact, it didn't even really occur to me that I should find this funny. To each their own, I suppose.

"Well, it's one of the more accurate titles ever." - a review by mino

I saw Sissy Boy Slap Party as part of a trio of short films directed by Canadian Guy Maddin, prior to a screening of his film Cowards Bend The Knee (2003) as part of the Melbourne International Film Festival.

It says something about the films of Guy Maddin that Sissy Boy Slap Party — a short which consists of an enormous slap-fight between a bunch of rather camp men at what is possibly some sort of day-spa type arrangement, and hence is effectively three plus minutes of people slapping each other on the face, back, chest, buttocks, and elsewhere, bookended by a perfunctory opening and closing — was by far the least surreal thing I saw that night.

Sissy Boy Slap Party is totally ridiculous, but really surprisingly amusing, given that it's just a couple of minutes of people in tight shorts smacking each other across the chops. The violence is so over-the-top and exaggerated that you keep thinking it's surely peaked; and then it gets worse, and you can't help but laugh.

Silly, but fairly amusing.

mino gives this movie 5 out of 10.

  1. An amusing burlesque of the thirties south seas films, with a gay subtext. Really quite good, considering the thinness of the plot.
