"The joys of being young and stupid" - a review by pearly

Joy is an interesting experiment. It is a film about a teenage girl named Joy (Deborah Clay) who hangs out at shopping malls, has a bit to drink, and then gets it on with whoever is closest. The film's writer and director, Cate Shortland, described her as a "product of popular culture: shopping malls, mini skirts, and Saturday morning television".

The unique part of this film is that, over the top of the action of Joy going about her daily business, occasional text runs across the shot in huge letters, and the text consists of the kinds of things that parents are constantly telling their kids, things like "you should take a long hard look at yourself in the mirror", and various tellings-off beginning with "young lady...". These words of wisdom run across at appropriate moments, so that you look at what's going on from a different angle than what you may have been seconds earlier.

It's an interesting technique, and one that works for this short film, but would not be able to be translated into anything bigger without becoming tiresome. Joy is apparently a bit of a precursor to Shortland's debut feature length film, Somersault (2004), so it'll be interesting to see how these concepts are translated to the longer medium.

pearly gives this movie 6 out of 10.

  2. While it was highly disturbing I really got into this short film. Alot of kids are going through that sort of thing.
