"Not as bad as you'd think, not as good as it could be" - a review by mino

I'm sure a bunch of you reading this have seen Bring It On (2000). And I'm sure a bunch of you are thinking ‘Wow. That movie was terrible. Why would they make a sequel?’. More than anything, I'm sure that this bunch of you are idiots and wouldn't know a good movie if it ran out from behind a bush, stabbed you in the belly, stole your wallet and ate your Pomeranian. Bring It On is one of the greatest ‘teen comedies’ this side of Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986). Honestly, what would you know?

Anyway, the fact that Bring It On was a great film doesn't answer the other half of that point: why would they make a sequel? I mean, we're not talking about The Terminator (1984) here, right? Bring It On was not a movie which would seem to have left itself open for a sequel.

Rather, Bring It On Again is… well, it's not really a sequel. It's just a straight-to-video movie about cheerleaders, really, which recycles the name. Though, hell, that's all that the first film was too. It was a smart, sexy, funny, exciting movie about cheerleaders, sure, but it was still a movie about cheerleaders. Bring It On Again transplants the action from a high school to a university. Anne Judson-Yager is Whittier Smith, a keen cheerleader who arrives at Cal State University and instantly wins a prize place in the champion cheerleading squad, which is run by prize bitch Tina, who makes Big Red from the first film look like Maria from The Sound of Music (1965). When Whittier hooks up with layabout DJ Derek, instead of one of the college's star footballers, though, she becomes persona non grata.

Whittier, though, isn't the kind of girl to take things lying down (well… actually, never mind). She decides to fight back, and form her own cheerleading squad, filled with all the losers and basket cases from the closed-down dance and drama classes. From there… well, you can guess, I'm sure. There's nothing else to add.

Yeah, it sounds terrible. And in a way, it is. Bring It On Again shamelessly plunders from the first film, even opening in basically the same way, and containing basically many of the same scenes rehashed, but rather less charming this time around. The writers try and reproduce the machine-gun-fast back-to-back zingers of the original, and largely fail, though to be fair to them the occasional line, no matter how derivative, manages to raise a chuckle (“I'm gonna make like a Tom, and cruise.”). And when they run out of bits from Bring It On to plunder, they just start stealing clichés from every other teen film, including a stereotypical ‘crusty old dean’ straight from central casting.

That said, it's not all bad, though you'd think it might be. Surprisingly for a cast of unknowns, the acting is actually really quite good. The cast have an absolute ball and do a very good job with some mostly terrible lines. Judson-Yager is really quite endearing though, let's face it, she's no Kirsten Dunst (in more ways than one!), and Bree Turner makes a wonderful superbitch. The cheer routines are great fun and the movie itself is generally good fun.

The biggest thing Bring It On Again is lacking, though, is the knowing humour the first film had. Bring It On poked fun at the whole teen movie genre, while simultaneously being one of the best examples of it, which was a very nifty feat indeed. Bring It On Again, though, has only a small amount of the original's charm, and is simply another teen movie. It's not a bad one, mind, which is itself a pleasant surprise; it's just not a brilliant one.

mino gives this movie 4 out of 10.

  1. This was a cute movie. It could've been better, but I liked it for the most part. In a way Richard Lee Jackson is hot. He's got that dorky look going and I think it's adorable. Actually he was my favorite part of the movie. Throughout the movie I felt so bad for him. I wanted to enter the screen to comfort him. The plot was pretty good, but it's no comparison to the first Bring It On at all. All of these actors are pretty much unknown except for about two of the actors. The acting was average, trust me I'm a drama student.Putting all of my information together I would say that this movie is somewhere between average and good
