"Everyone's favourite clerks" - a review by mino

The Flying Car is a made-for-TV short film by Kevin Smith, director of such classics as Clerks (1994) and Dogma (1999), as well as the rather-less-than-classic Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001). The short was produced for The Tonight Show in the US, and basically features Dante and Randal (Brian O'Halloran and Jeff Anderson) from Clerks sitting a car talking nonsense for seven minutes.

So what's the point? Well, there isn't really one. It's basically an excuse for Smith to cram some of his trademark rambling dialogue into the mouths of his two first stars (well, mostly Anderson) and throw some stupid jokes into the mix. Dante and Randal are stuck in traffic, and Randal starts off a rant about how mankind really ought to get off its collective butt and build the long-awaited flying car. This impassioned and very funny rant turns into long and rambling hypothetical about what exactly Dante would be willing to do to help get the flying car in the hands of the world's traffic-bound drivers.

The whole thing basically builds to one joke which is pretty much not worth it, but that doesn't really matter. Given the rather minimalist nature of the film, it's incredibly funny, largely thanks to the irritating-yet-lovable character of Randal and the fantastic job Jeff Anderson does with some great lines. Seeing this short actually reminds you what a great film Clerks was in the first place thanks to the great job these two actors did portraying that film's leading losers.

The Flying Car is totally stupid and pointless — but it's very funny indeed. So, really, who really gives a damn?

mino gives this movie 8 out of 10.

If I won 10 Best Actor Oscars but Jack Palance accidentally read out Marisa Tomei's name when I won 4 of those Best Actor Oscars, how many Best Actor Oscars did I actually take home?
