"Cut in half for twice the fun" - a review by pearly

Full Metal Jacket is like a film in two halves. The first, which is to me the more interesting of the two, shows a group of young recruits in Marine training, where their drill instructor (R. Lee Ermey) is extremely tough on them. The second half shows the same recruits on their tour of duty in Vietnam.

This is a war movie unlike any other. The performance of Ermey in the first half is brilliant - he is ruthless with the cadets, and it's excrutiating to watch, but you don't know whether to laugh or cry. One of the rather portly recruits, a guy by the name of Leonard Lawrence (Vincent D'Onofrio), is given the nickname of Pyle (after the television show Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.), and is beaten up with soaps in socks by his fellow recruits. These incidents do not sit very well with Lawrence, who is played menacingly well by D'Onofrio.

And onto the second half. Here, the surviving cadets from training head into separate areas of Vietnam for their tour of duty. It's an up-close portrait of the horrors of war, but it fails to pack a punch as strong as the close of the first half, as far as I'm concerned. It's not that the film fizzled, but I just felt that the first half had more punch, and the dark humour was more evident, whereas the second was more straight down the line.

Full Metal Jacket is a rather gruelling watch, but for people who are up for this type of challenge, it's worthwhile. You can even take a little break in between the two sections if you feel like it! It shows how the individual deals with a war situation, each in his own way. I am not really a fan of war films, but I did rather appreciate this one.

pearly gives this movie 8 out of 10.
