"Short and bitter" - a review by mino

Vincent is a sick, funny, twisted, morbid, and basically brilliant short from Tim Burton, from back in the earliest days of his career. It's the story of a seven-year-old boy named Vincent Malloy who is absolutely obsessed with matters gothic, particularly the works of Vincent Price. It's very short (six minutes or so) but very clever and really quite funny.

The only dialogue in the black-and-white short is the narration from Price himself, and he does a sterling job with the wonderful poem Burton gives him to read, equal parts Edgar Allan Poe and Dr. Seuss (though some lines don't quite scan as well as do those from those two masters, but whatever). Price clearly relishes his role, delivering some great lines (“He likes to experiment on his dog Abercrombie / In the hopes of creating a horrible zombie. / So he and his horrible zombie dog / Could go searching for victims in the London fog.”) with equally great gusto. The animation is whimsical and wonderful, and in nearly every aspect of the film — the humour, the darkness, the characters, and the twisted visual design — you can see both obvious and subtle examples of the themes in each area that have gone on to play such major parts in Burton's later films.

Vincent is a delightful short film — simple, quick, clever, and making superb use of a very short runtime. Worth seeing for anyone, but particularly for anyone who's a fan of Burton and wants to see one of the earliest examples of his incredibly distinctive filmmaking.

mino gives this movie 9 out of 10.

  1. I saw this on the Nightmare Before Christmas DVD, and absolutely adored it. It really shows that Tim really had his trademark developed at an early age, watching Vincent Price movies. Love it!
