"Shitty." - a review by mino

Boomerang is a comedic short film won the 3rd-place prize in the 2002 Tropfest short film festival.

Apparently, 2002 was a very weak year for short films.

I originally thought of describing Boomerang as a one-joke film, but I realise now that this would be unfair. Sure, it only has one joke, but that joke consists of three distinct sub-jokes — so, you know, that's a veritable comedy cornucopia, innit?

The big issue is, Boomerang just isn't funny. The humour is solely scatological, but that's not the problem — believe me, I can be very lowbrow when I need to be. No, the problem is that the poo jokes that form the backbone of Boomerang are simultaneously unfunny, unoriginal, and so mind-bogglingly predictable that I sincerely hope that director Carla Drago's attempts at building to a ‘twist’ ending were intended as a parody, because anyone who doesn't see the ending coming has some pretty severe mental deficiencies that they really oughta get checked out by a qualified professional.

Yawn. Next.

mino gives this movie 3 out of 10.

  1. I found this one of the most amusing short films I have seen for years! The humour was of course lavatorial, but in using this the Director , Carla Drago, breaks a taboo. I particularly liked the "sting in the tail".

  2. I have just seen this tonight on SBS just before Iron Chef at 8.30
I would give it zero out of 10 . Did it have to be THAT realistic in depicting faeces in the toilet, couldn't it have been implied rather than showing it all? I did not realise it was even meant to be a comedy until the bag snatcher put his hand in the bag. The ending was totally unbelievable. The only good thing about the whole miserable effort was when I read the credits ( to see who was responsible) and I found that the long suffering Australian tax-payer did not have to subsidise this piece of mind-numbing piece of garbage.

If I won 12 Best Actress Oscars but Jack Palance accidentally read out Marisa Tomei's name when I won 5 of those Best Actress Oscars, how many Best Actress Oscars did I actually take home?
