To the future... - Tim White
10 minutes
Carey Baptist Grammar School, Kew

"It is Peter's 40th birthday and this is one he is planning to celebrate, if only he can make it home. The pace of this gripping work holds the audience until . . ."

As he sits in a restaurant with his machine-gun-mouthed wife, we hear Peter's thoughts as he contemplates how he's going to kill her by exactly (so and so) o'clock — the exact time he turns a round forty. Constant annoyances interrupt his well-laid plans, causing Peter to have to readjusts little details in order keep up with the delays. Alas, he gets delayed so much that he ends up having to resort to murder right at their doorstop in order to meet his deadline, but then...

To the future... was the last top screen short, and it was heavily praised by all my mates as "by far the best one". I didn't find it as great as they did, but it was still quite good in comparison with the rest.

Generally speaking, it was quite a decent film with good actors and clever filmmaking (the bits of contemplations were fantastic); the problem was that the "twist ending" was so clichéd that I ended up predicting it from about a mile away, while my slightly slower mates didn't see it coming at all and ended up finding it almost awe-inspiring.

But, clichéd or not, it was still quite clever, engaging and enjoyable, and White pulled it off well.
