"Slightly too blue, not particularly great" - a review by em_fiction

Hard ol' knuckles blue - Emily Mendoza
5 minutes 25 seconds
Star of the Sea College, Gardenvale

"A tender tribute to the life and work of musician Noel Mendoza. Song, dance and music weave the story of this remarkable man."

I wasn't really sure what this one was about until I read the synopsis afterwards. From what I saw, it was a series of images (both still and moving) of a piano, a microphone, some random talking people, breakdancers, sheet music, and some other stuff that I can't remember, all toned very blue. It was also backed by some slow jazz, and narrated with slow poetry (I could tell it was poetry because it kept pausing in regular intervals, and didn't really make any particular sense).

This is probably the one top screen short that I least remember (I'm pretty sure I'm still fit to review it though). The problem was that things were a little too random and slightly artsy-fartsy, perhaps not as severe as in the case of The Doll House (2004), but still, there was no real substance or structure. I was sitting there hoping that something in this montage (the nonsensical poetic narration in particular) would just suddenly spring out and justify this whole mess. It never did.

em_fiction gives this movie 3 out of 10.

  1. Those familiar with Noel's work will be fondly proud of this showcase and montage of moments from his career even though it is not depicted in a linear style. A great self-taught musician - excellent effort to daughter Emily.

  2. Just wow... I have heard of this jazz man and searched for this movie.. The initial comment from Em fiction deserves to be deleted from this site... It is sad to see begrudgers of talent are still around.. Emily Mendoza please produce again!!
