Crazy whist - Corey O'Meara
10 minutes
Upwey High School, Upwey

"The story of extraordinary friendships forged through a monthly game of cards. The pace and direction of this piece allows the characters to tell their own story."

For four decades, a group of old friends in suburban Melbourne have gotten together regularly for a game of whist. This documentary explores how they've maintained their friendship for all this time.

Whist is definitely one of the better top screen entries, chiefly because of its professionalism. While video quality is fairly detrimental to the fictional works, especially The Evil Within (2004), it works in favour of this film because the documentarian style suits the DV appearance. The way the characters are introduced, interviewed and depicted within the shots are done not unlike something you'd see probably catch on the ABC while channel surfing. A documentary about a group of elderly women playing cards isn't exactly my cup of tea, but this film successfully conveys its messages with solid filmmaking, and for that I respect it.

em_fiction gives this movie 7 out of 10.
