"Cute but bland" - a review by mino

Bad Baby Amy is a mildly amusing, but ultimately rather unsatisfying, ‘claymation’ short film which tells the story of Rose, a young girl who lives on a drought-stricken outback station with her father, her grandmother, and her little sister Amy.

Rose loves hearing her grandmother's stories, particularly the one about a necklace heirloom that her grandmother brought over from the ‘old country’. When Dad goes off to do some farm business, Rose is left in charge of Amy, and of course things soon start to go wrong.

I'm not sure that I'm the target audience for Bad Baby Amy, because I gather that it's aimed at, say, primary-school-age kids. Somehow, though, I can't see it really engaging them either. While the animation is wonderfully done, I just think the story is kind of dull and devolves at the end into what could either be taken as ‘charming fantasy’ or ‘pointless pseudo-mystical claptrap’; I'm inclined to run with the latter.

If Bad Baby Amy had just been a story about Rose and her life on the farm, fine; as it was, I think it just tried too hard to be a heartwarming story, and as a result lost a lot of its charm.

mino gives this movie 5 out of 10.
