"Mediocre at best" - a review by pearly

Gina Katz (Justine Clarke) is having a bad day at the office. After arriving late (again), she is fired for taking smoko breaks in the toilet and bitching about her boss, her "productive time" not being up to scratch. Feeling sorry for herself, she goes for a drink at a trendy bar, but is asked to leave because she is inappropriately dressed. Hoping to prove a point to the bartender, she spends an outrageous amount of money on designer clothes and heads back to the bar to drink her troubles away.

And this is where she meets Ethan (Tom Long) and Lars (Leon Ford). These two brothers are con artists who use the bar to woo potential investors to their "company". As Gina is feeling dejected, she pretends to be a big shot, and catches the brother's eyes. It is not until later that both parties realise that they have been fooling one another, and it is at this point that they decide to join forces and get some real investor interest.

And that is where Alex Dimitriades comes into the picture: playing the rich son of a sick executive who is put in charge of the company, and is just naive enough to fall for the other's charms.

I watched Go Big's world premiere - a momentous event on Channel Ten a week and half or so ago. I did this as I had nothing better to do that night, not because I thought that Go Big would actually be any good. For a telemovie though, it wasn't going too badly at first. But after a little bit, it got so unnecessarily convoluted that it was just ridiculous. It was trying to stick its fingers into too many pies, and, as a result, not really succeeding at any of them. In part, it's a feelgood tale about a girl who comes to realise what's really important in life (though the ending was pretty terrible), in part it's a love story (though she ends up with the wrong guy), and in other parts, other things.

And then, Bruce Samazan shows up in a bit part. Bruce Samazan?! Who on earth has heard from him in the last ten years? No-one, that's who. He went from E Street to Neighbours to Home and Away in quick succession (showing his prowess with that list of accomplishments, to be sure), and then boooooooooop, flat line. I figured he must be in a gutter somewhere.

And only seconds later, there he was. Felix Williamson. My mortal enemy. Again, just a bit part, but the bit was a bigger bit than Samazan's bit. And he was playing a nerd. With glasses and flattened hair. Blergh. I wanted to turn off straight away, but I was strangely drawn to watching him and his unnaturally flat hair. He was playing the nerd almost Professor Frink style, with strange noises coming out of his mouth. What an odd, odd man he is.

pearly gives this movie 4 out of 10.

  3. I liked the film, it had a good storyline. It was intreseting throughout, I would have just wished that after they sold out of Go Big they would have started a new big company and buy out Hamish's empire.... Anyway, good film
