"Four down, one to go" - a review by em_fiction

Okay, I've reviewed three of Don Hertzfeldt's films, and he's made (correct me if I'm wrong) five in total, so what the heck, I might as well just do all of them. Another piece of useless info: I've reviewed them in no particular order whatsoever — I started with his latest, then went to his first, then went to his second latest, and now back to his second: Genre. After this, I've only got the in-between one left to do: Lily and Jim (1997), but let's not think too far ahead. Ah, so it's true, I can actually stuff a whole heap of unnecessary shit into my introductory paragraph. Anyway, moving along.

The plot behind Genre is basically as the title states. An actual live anonymous animator (who we assume is Don) uses a stubborn but cute little bunny rabbit character to experiment with different genres. The little fellow gives us a bit of everything, from the religious film to the abstract foreign western. And the end result: absolute hilarity.

After the rather disturbing experience, that is, Billy's Balloon (1998), Genre was a pleasing comeback to Hertzfeldt's lighter side (yes, I know it came out before, but I watched it after, and I... shut up). It's also the only Hertzfeldt piece you could probably slap a PG rating on and perhaps show to your little siblings without them asking you what that red stuff is. In a way, it is pretty unfortunate that there weren't any chainsaws, knives, killer balloons or anus bleeders in this one. Nevertheless, the live-action/animation combination works very well, the whole thing is quite clever and indeed, it is very, very funny.

em_fiction gives this movie 8 out of 10.
