"Gereing up to change Lanes" - a review by pearly

From the sounds of Unfaithful, what you have is just your regular, everyday film about infidelity. And, as a matter of fact, that's pretty much exactly what you do have. Except for one thing. And that one thing is Diane Lane.

Lane was both Oscar and Golden Globe nominated for this role - yet the film didn't rate a mention in any other categories, and there were quite a few other awards that went along similar lines. Playing Connie, the wife of Edward (Richard Gere), Lane is absolutely brilliant as the woman with the perfect life until she turns it all upside-down by beginning an affair with a stranger that she bumped into on the street: the hunky Paul (Olivier Martinez).

Next to Lane, Gere looks positively amateurish. Martinez does a little better, but he's certainly no match for Lane's intensity. In particular, the scenes in which Connie and Paul first get it on showcases Lane's skill - she certainly won me over.

But, the fact of the matter is that aside from this, Unfaithful really isn't much more. It is a well sculpted film; cleverly put together. It doesn't try to be too whizz-bang, it just tells a similar story to many that have been told before. I don't think it's even trying to be ground-breaking, it's just trying to do what it does well. It succeeds, somewhat, but it is far from the best film I have ever seen.

There is also one large downside: the casting of Erik Per Sullivan as Connie and Edward's son Charlie. I mean please. The guy is best known is the stupid little kid who watches the wrestling non-stop in Malcolm in the Middle. In other words, he's garbage. Blergh, just thinking about his weird little ears makes my skin crawl.

pearly gives this movie 6 out of 10.
