"Good simple fun" - a review by pearly

It's the mid-to-late 1970s, last day of school. In a small Texan town, there is the graduating class, and the next year's freshmen. For this day, they go through a ritual, one that the graduating students enjoy, and most of the upcoming freshmen do not. For the boys, this means being whacked on the butt with paddles. And for the girls, it means putting dummies into their mouths and being forced to ask boys to marry them and do anything for them.

These sorts of traditions, thought of as relatively harmless by most people at the time (ignored by both teachers and parents alike), would never be allowed to happen in this new (enlightened?) age of law suits. But despite the humiliation and pain that the youngsters are put through, most of the people in Dazed and Confused are enjoying themselves, and see it all as a bit of harmless fun.

So as the day progresses into night, the proposed party is cancelled due to a father discovering that his house is to be the location, and the students all eventually congregate in a field to drink, smoke, and so on.

Dazed and Confused is a portrait of those exciting days in a kid's life - preparing to start high school, and being done with it. Furthermore, it's a portrait of these events during the seventies, which adds another dimension to the film, and turns it from teen flick into something more. All the stereotypes are there: the bully, the stoner, the good looking rebel who plays by his own rules, the nerd(s), the shy girl, and so on.

I like it. I like that it's just a day in the life. There's no looking forward or back, no need for massive introductions to the characters, just straight into the plot. No funny business, just here it is, and this is what you get. It takes this simple concept, and manages to make it insightful, funny, interesting. It's just a good old-fashioned movie. And watching 10 years or so after its creation, it's fun to see where each of its actors have ended up.

pearly gives this movie 7 out of 10.
