"Macy's talent is clear" - a review by pearly

William H. Macy is an actor who is just great to watch. He's wonderful in everything he turns his hand to, and Focus is no exception. Based on a novel by Arthur Miller, Focus is a metaphoric tale of a man named Lawrence who, just as World War II is ending, gets himself a pair of eye glasses, and begins to be mistaken identified as Jewish.

Initially a fairly tolerant person who feels he has been forced to be prejudiced towards some people by his boss and society as a whole, Lawrence comes to realise that his treatment of others is as bad no matter what the reasons, and he turns his life upside-down in an attempt to confront his morals and try to do what he feels is right, no matter what.

Focus is a wonderful watch as it is based on an intelligent and beautifully written script. It also boasts a top cast, with Macy at the head. Laura Dern certainly looks the part as his eventual wife, David Paymer as Lawrence's only actual Jewish neighbour, and Meat Loaf as the most anti-Semitic neighbour, proving once and for all that he can actually act, and that his hilarious performance in Fight Club (1999) wasn't just a fluke.

Focus is definitely one for people who like to use their brains whilst watching movies, and it is not without flaws, but it offers a different perspective on these times than that which is usually made the subject of a movie.

pearly gives this movie 7 out of 10.
