"Middle of the road" - a review by pearly

It seems inevitable to me that as far as romantic comedies are concerned, after a while they're just all going to meld into one big blob, because it doesn't seem like there's that much you can do with the genre. Sure, you can set a romance on Mars, or make it same-sex, but it's still about essentially the same thing, and it's not at the top of my "most interesting topics" list.

Some of them are going to be better than others, most will keep you vaguely amused for a coupla hours, and some which might have seemed promising on paper don't end up as good on screen. Someone Like You is one of those. It's based on a novel called Animal Husbandry by Laura Zigman, which is about a young lass named Jane (Ashley Judd) who, after being dumped by her no-good boyfriend Ray (Greg Kinnear), comes up with a theory about how all men are like bulls who constantly look for a new cow to mate with.

That ingenious piece of simile could have been the key to creating a film that stood apart from other romantic comedies - it had a little bit of uniqueness about it. And it kinda worked; it was interesting for a little while, but that was about it really. It wasn't really enough to hold my interest for the length of a feature film, so it ended up sitting where most other romantic comedies do in my mind - somewhere towards the middle.

At the end of a movie on Showtime, they sometimes show interviews or outtakes (the kinds of things that would end up as special features on a DVD) over the credits. With Someone Like You, they showed an impromptu interview with Hugh Jackman, who stars as the guy that Jane turns to when things go bad with Ray. The interviewer commented to him that it wasn't the kind of thing that Jackman would usually be found in, and asked him why he had decided to be in the film. Jackman responded that, having only recently arrived in the U.S. at the time, that there weren't exactly many other offers rolling in. That about sums it up, really.

If I won 13 Best Adapted Screenplay Oscars but Jack Palance accidentally read out Marisa Tomei's name when I won 3 of those Best Adapted Screenplay Oscars, how many Best Adapted Screenplay Oscars did I actually take home?
