"You could be doing something else right now" - a review by pearly

Orange County. Modern day. Shaun (Colin Hanks) wants to go to Stanford University. Someone else's academic transcript is sent as his own. Shaun is rejected by Stanford. Shaun's screw-up brother Lance (Jack Black) tells Shaun not to worry. Shaun is worried. And he is not amused.

So, Tom Hanks' son in his first leading man role. Come on, I had to mention it. And, as an added bonus, you have Schuyler Fisk, Sissy Spacek's daughter. It's a veritable trevor trove of second generation wannabe stars! And Jack Black.

Orange County is a passable comedy, but it's nothing particularly original or special. Even the bits that they played in the trailers and ads left me unimpressed, and didn't get me interested in the film, but what the heck, it was on my newly acquired $12.95 movie channel, so I gave it a viewing.

Not even the bevy of celebrity actors in cameos helped to provide many laughs. Lily Tomlin as the slack school careers counsellor wasn't funny, Chevy Chase (as another of the teachers) has a line about Britney Spears which is one of the things in the trailer, and also isn't funny. Kevin Kline, Harold Ramis and Ben Stiller also make brief appearances, two of which are so memorable that I can't even remember them, and the other of which wasn't funny.

Really, Catherine O'Hara is the funniest thing in the movie, which isn't very surprising, because she's great. But what's she doing in such a mediocre film? Come on Cathy, lift your game! Jack Black is the same as he always is, which is great if you're fond of his work.

If you would otherwise spend your evening watching paint dry, or watching grass grow, or watching a Jean-Claude Van Damme movie, then sure, give Orange County a go, but if you have anything better to do (watching re-runs of Degrassi, finding a cure for AIDS) then you'll probably find that other activity more fulfilling / entertaining.

pearly gives this movie 3 out of 10.

If I won 10 Best Supporting Actor Oscars but Jack Palance accidentally read out Marisa Tomei's name when I won 2 of those Best Supporting Actor Oscars, how many Best Supporting Actor Oscars did I actually take home?
