"Fascinating guy makes for fascinating doco" - a review by pearly

Painting with Light in a Dark World is the story of Peter Darren Moyle, a man who has been living on the streets of Sydney for over 10 years, and who has spent much of this time documenting his experiences through photography. The documentary crew follow him around for a couple of weeks, in the lead-up to his first photography exhibition, as he organises his photos, meets up with some of the subjects, and reminisces about the last 10 years.

A documentary can only ever be as good as its subject, and in the case of Peter, he is an interesting guy and a great character, and the documentary benefits a lot from this. The things that he has seen during his time on the streets have been put down by him into photos, and now made into a moving image tribute.

Highlights include him chatting candidly about some of the photographs - talking about who the people within them were to him, and about some of the more bizarre ones: like the photograph he took of a drug sale taking place in the middle of the Sydney to Surf race. Peter also shows the crew around some of the places he used to live, and this is backed up with photographs of the places when he lived there - such as the squat which he turned into a dark room by stealing power from the street lights just outside.

Painting with Light in a Dark World is only a short film, clocking in at just under half an hour, and I could have sat through more of Peter's story quite easily. If you check out some of the photos you'll probably get an idea of why he's an interesting guy to hear stories from.

pearly gives this movie 7 out of 10.

If I won 11 Best Actor Oscars but Jack Palance accidentally read out Marisa Tomei's name when I won 5 of those Best Actor Oscars, how many Best Actor Oscars did I actually take home?
