"Not so ragey, not so placid" - a review by pearly

Ben Lee has done the actor turned musician thing the wrong way around. He's gone from muso to actor, and The Rage in Placid Lake is his first film, in which he plays the lead character of Placid Lake. Ain't life grand when you're famous?

Placid Lake is the son of two hippies; Sylvia and Doug (Miranda Richardson and Garry McDonald, respectively). He decides that his life is too difficult, and that it would be much easier to coast through life without getting too much attention, and that he should therefore rebel by conforming and becoming an insurance salesman. Placid's mother and father are shocked, as is his best friend, the studious Gemma (Rose Byrne).

Tony McNamara has certainly come up with an interesting idea for a story. It's well executed, too, with Mr Lee doing a surprisingly good job of acting alongside relative veterans Richardson and McDonald, and the gorgeous up-and-coming star Byrne (who is probably the stand-out cast member here).

It's pretty much a coming of age tale with a twist, and we see Placid fitting himself into the groove of the 9 to 5 job, and then, towards the end, finally figuring out where he wants his life to go.

Amusing, thought-provoking, but other than that, it doesn't really touch the sides as it goes down. Also, everyone already knows this, but in case you don't, Ben's (better known) girlfriend Claire Danes has a cameo, so watch out for that.

pearly gives this movie 7 out of 10.
