"Comedy rule #103: jokes about dim sims = thumbs up" - a review by pearly

Take Away begins with an hilarious scene involving an olden days inn, where a customer requests his fish be wrapped in newspaper so that he can take it away, the inn being too packed for him to be able to get a table. And, thankfully, it's not downhill from there. Fairly well known Aussie comedian Dave O'Neil and his mate Mark O'Toole got together to write this, their first film, and they've produced a great script which captures O'Neil's rather obvious love for food perfectly (remember his reviews of the cinema lollies on The Mick Molloy Show?).

The film proper is about two take away food shop owners who have shops a couple of doors down from one another. There's Tony (Vince Colosimo), the clean and responsible one, and Trev (Stephen Curry), the disgusting slob who makes burgers with the secret ingredient of VB. Trev and Tony can't get along, but when the Burgies food chain opens a store right next door, they're forced to band together to save their businesses.

The sentiment behind Take Away reminded me a lot of that other favourite Aussie comedy The Castle (1997). It's little fish versus big fish, with the audience barracking all the way for the little fish to win. One of the scenes in Take Away is even a beefed-up version of the one where the Kerrigans steal the gate from the developer guy's fence.

The Castle is a good film to mention in a review of Take Away, because if you like one, you're bound to like the other. O'Neil's foray into the film-writing world makes his film another addition to the countless other Melbournian comedians who have been down that path before (all with similar results really); from the various members of the Working Dog team to Jimeoin. And although lots of these films aren't affiliated with each other, they're like a little gang of gems, each funnier than the last (depending on which order you put them in).

Take Away has a great cast to back up the script too. I still don't see Colosimo as a comedian, but he's more of the Bud Abbott to Curry's Lou Costello. Curry is the funniest cast member - he definitely has comedy experience that the other cast members don't, and you can see it. Nathan Phillips has quite a different role to his breakthrough role in Australian Rules (2002), but both he and the gorgeous Rose Byrne are great to watch.

So, Australia, prepare to sit back and have a chuckle at how funny us Aussies are. Cos if there's one thing we're good at, it's taking the piss out of ourselves.

pearly gives this movie 7 out of 10.
