"Jeepers." - a review by pearly

Rolf de Heer's Alexandra's Project is a difficult film to watch. It makes you squirm in your seat, and cringe, averting your eyes from the screen. It's a thriller, but it doesn't contain any moments which make you jump or scream out loud. It's one of those psychological thrillers, and it really messes with your mind.

The film is about Steve (Gary Sweet), a regular enough type of guy. The only thing that's slightly out-of-the-ordinary about Steve on this particular day, is that it's his birthday. He's got work to go to - just a regular office job - and then he'll drag his weary bones home and hopefully get some pressies from his wife Alexandra (Helen Buday) and their two children. But Alexandra has other plans.

Upon arriving home, Steve finds the house abandoned, and all that is waiting for him is a video, presumably made for him by his wife. As Steve begins to watch, we're led, along with Steve, into Alexandra's world, and what we find is not pretty.

de Heer has created a very memorable film here. It sticks in your mind and makes you shiver for a long time afterwards. It is in many ways similar to his much earlier film, Bad Boy Bubby (1993), but if anything, it's a step further than that was. In terms of structure, the film is very tightly put together, with no loose ends, and this is commendable. In subject matter, there's lots that will shock, both visually and mentally. Go in prepared for Alexandra's Project, and you'll have a slight edge on Steve.

pearly gives this movie 8 out of 10.
