"Get me away from it!" - a review by pearly

[insert huge unappreciative sigh here]

Van Wilder (Ryan Reynolds) has been at university for ever. He's taken to failing on purpose so that he can stay at uni, being a bum, and living off his dad's money. But at the start of the year in which the movie begins, Van's dad wises up and cuts off his money supply. Our poor Van is going to have to drop out of uni! That is, unless he has the brilliant idea of becoming a party liaison, which he does (and, thankfully for us Aussies, the title of the movie becomes not simply Van Wilder, but Van Wilder: Party Liaison - just in case we didn't understand what the hell "Van Wilder" meant).

So Van hires himself a personal assistant, who is Indian, which of course leads to many "hilarious" accented puns. And things are going swimmingly, until he comes across Gwen (Tara Reid) who is meant to be writing a newspaper story about him. Van becomes smitten with the responsible Gwen, yadda yadda yadda, he wins her heart and learns the evil of his ways.

Van Wilder (don't forget, he's a party liaison) is a load of schmaltzy crap. First hint that this movie is going to be bad: it stars one of the stars of the television show Three Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place (name later changed to Three Guys and a Girl because the pizza place just didn't cut the mustard anymore). It's as manufactured as you can get. Besides the massively obvious moral ending, there's the fart jokes (and worse) for the guys, and the romance for the girls. Every demographic is covered (except those under 15 or over 22 years of age).

As far as stupid teen movies go, this is around the stupidest. I can't think of one redeeming quality that the movie has. Its humour is made up of nearly 100% gross-out jokes - and if you liked American Pie (1999), or other similar films there's still probably only a 50% chance that you'll like this. Now admittedly, I don't fall into the narrow demographic, but that hasn't always stopped me from enjoying things like this in the past. This one is just terrible, really terrible.

pearly gives this movie 2 out of 10.

If I won 8 Best Supporting Actor Oscars but Jack Palance accidentally read out Marisa Tomei's name when I won 6 of those Best Supporting Actor Oscars, how many Best Supporting Actor Oscars did I actually take home?
