"Mostly meandering" - a review by pearly

Mostly Martha is the story of a German gal named (coincidentally) Martha (Martina Gedeck). Martha is head chef at a prestigious restaurant - and life for Martha is her kitchen. She lives alone, and her focus is 100% on things like perfecting her fish dishes. But when her sister dies in a car accident, she is forced to totally change her lifestyle in order to look after her niece (Maxime Foerste). This involves her loosening her grip on her controlled way of life.

Essentially, Mostly Martha is a story about romance, but there's more to it than just that. More interesting than the romance, in my mind, is Martha's personality, and the way in which she changes over time - growing into a more free and happy person, with the help of her new assistant chef Mario (Sergio Castellitto).

Mostly Martha has many discussions about food, and scenes where people are preparing food. I made sure that I had a good box of popcorn happening whilst I watched it. But, as romantic comedies go, this film has many interesting and complex goings on, which puts it onto a different level. Martina Gedeck is glowing in her role, and Sergio Castellitto makes you feel happy to be alive. Mostly Martha is a sleeper of a movie that passes by quietly, but leaves its mark on those that see it.

pearly gives this movie 7 out of 10.
