"An extremely disappointing ending" - a review by pearly

K-PAX is about a man who may have come from the planet K-PAX, or, alternatively, he may just be a complete loon. Kevin Spacey plays Prot (pronounced "Prote"), the guy who just appears out of nowhere one day, and flips the life of Dr Mark Powell (Jeff Bridges) upside-down, as Powell tries to figure out the mysteries of Prot.

This film reminded me a lot of The Fisher King - not only because Jeff Bridges played a similar role in each. It's an exploration of sanity, and tries to get the viewer to really believe in one thing, and then give them a tidbit of information that challenges that belief.

Unfortunately, it's just not clicking for me. The suspenseful bits aren't really all that suspenseful, and there are some big things left hanging that, while it's good not to spell everything out, aren't well-defined enough to keep you wondering about them. It's one of those sorts of movies where you sit there for most of it trying to figure out how it will end. It's relying so much on that ending to tie everything together in some way (whether neatly, or with some questions remaining). And with these types of movies, one of the worst thing that can happen is that the ending is disappointing - which the ending to K-PAX is.

Spacey's performance is actually a little wooden and hard to get into - possibly his interpretation of how a K-PAXian would act when asked to explain his presence on Earth - but it makes it a little difficult to actually get interested in what's going on with the characters. Far from his best work.

This film would probably have benefitted from having more time spent on the script, but I can't shake the feeling that no matter what, it just seemed done.

pearly gives this movie 5 out of 10.

  1. I found this movie extremely confusing, especially at the end where I was left still unsure of what really happened to the K-Paxian, or whether he was just schizo.
