"Newsflash! Cult comedy hero makes mediocre film!" - a review by mino

I've been a fan of Ali G for a while. The character, a creation of British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, is most famous for his mock interviews, in which he subjects an array of minor celebrities to a barrage of questions, specifically selected for their stupidity and ability to embarrass. These interviews, at least up until he became famous enough that everyone worked out what he was doing, were uniformly hilarious: not the least because of Baron Cohen's amazingly quick wit. No matter which turn the conversation took, Ali was guaranteed to come back with a witty rejoinder. As far as improvisational interviews go, Ali G is right up there with Norman Gunston, Andrew Denton, or Julian Clary.

The big question is, then, if you take a character whose strength is his improvisational talent in an interview situation, and stick him in a movie with no interviews and little room for improv, will the humour come across?

Yes, yes. That is indeed the question. Unfortunately, the answer is 'no'.

The biggest problem with Ali G Indahouse is, sadly, the script. It's quite awful. The plot is flimsy at best, but that's not even the biggest problem: the biggest problem is the joke ratio. There are plenty of jokes in there; but unfortunately, only about four or five of them are funny — and when we're talking about a comedy, this is Not A Good Thing.

Adaptations of TV comedy series are often poor-to-mediocre at best; unfortunately, Ali G Indahouse falls smack in the middle of this scale. I can certainly think of worse ways to write off a Saturday afternoon, but I can also think of many better. The whole movie is somewhat amusing for fans of the Ali G character; others will be left puzzled as to what, exactly, they spent their twelve bucks on.

mino gives this movie 4 out of 10.

  3. Booyakasha!

Well I had a good laugh. A 2 hour version of the Ali G show with interviews etc would be, well, holy shit, really cool. But the movie was ok. As stupid as it was it was still a laugh. While as moronic as Scary Movie 1/2/3/4, it starangely wasn't quite as moronic as those. Must be because I'm a fan. Keepin it real.

2 hours of Borat tho....that could be killer.
