"Someone pass the popcorn" - a review by pearly

Ben Chaplin plays John, an approaching middle aged British guy who works as a teller at the bank, and, being the shy, reliable, boring type, has not been able to find himself a girl. So, he decides to get himself a mail-order bride from a website called "From Russia with love", and kaboom, in walks Nicole Kidman; Nadia.

A whole bunch of fun ensues when John realises that Nadia cannot speak English, tries to send her back to where she came from, but the company is not responding to his calls - and then, a friend of Nadia's shows up unannounced on her birthday, and John can't manage to get rid of him (or his friend) either.

Birthday Girl is certainly easy to watch - no challenges involved here. The plotline can be seen coming from a million miles off. Nicole Kidman kinda manages to pull off the whole Russian thing, but it's a really difficult sell to an Aussie who still remembers her from BMX Bandits (1983). Vincent Cassel pulls off a more memorable performance in Guest House Paradiso (1999) than he does in this one (and that's saying something), and Mathieu Kassovitz (Amélie (2001)'s gorgeous love interest) is positively wasted in this role.

The movie is quite fast paced and has fun with itself, but I find it very hard to accept the fairytale ending. If you take the movie for what it is - a frolic in the park - then you'll probably enjoy it. It's nothing special though.

pearly gives this movie 4 out of 10.
