"Superb and interesting docos" - a review by pearly

Technically a television series, episodes of First Person were shown at the 2002 Melbourne Film Festival. One thing is for sure, and that is that Errol Morris is a superb documentarian. His docos are always interesting in their subject matter, and the techniques used to film his subjects make for interesting viewing also (for example, the use of multiple cameras so that he can change angles mid-sentence).

Melbourne Film Festival Programme 2

  • The Only Truth - Murray Richman is a lawyer to the mob and gangsters (he's not fussy) such as Puff Daddy (or whatever his name is this week). He speaks candidly about representing the big names in the Mafia, and when asked "so do you think he actually committed the crime?", his response is mostly "yes... [pause] what's the problem?". If you can understand what he's going on about when he explains that the truth and the facts are two different things, then you're doing better than me.
  • One in a Million Trillion - the story of Rick Rosner, a guy with an amazingly high IQ whose obsessive personality meant that he completed his final year of high school four times in four different schools, just so that he could get it "right". After bombing out on Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, Rick has spent the rest of his life trying to go back and do the whole thing over. An extremely eccentric person, it is difficult to believe the person you're watching (he admits that he has neglected his daughter since losing on Millionaire, as he spends too much time researching his incorrect answer to a question that he claims is wrong) is real.
pearly gives this movie 8 out of 10.

If I won 12 Best Supporting Actor Oscars but Jack Palance accidentally read out Marisa Tomei's name when I won 3 of those Best Supporting Actor Oscars, how many Best Supporting Actor Oscars did I actually take home?
