"Art for art's sakes" - a review by pearly

High Art is missing something. It traces the lives of two women who are rediscovering themselves, both professionally and personally. Syd (Radha Mitchell) is ambitious in her role as assistant editor at Frame, a photography magazine. Lucy (Ally Sheedy) is floundering, having "retired" from photography ten years prior, but still keeping it up as a hobby. And so, the two meet, and find connections.

Lucy is trying to get out of her life with drug-obsessed girlfriend Greta. Syd thought she was happy with her boyfriend James; that was, until she met Lucy. And from there, the journey is meant to be deeply emotional and explorative. Only, it's not.

From my perspective, the characters just don't click. High Art is meant to be just that. A movie about high art, that is high art itself. And, I think it tries too hard to be that, and doesn't try hard enough to engage its audience. For this reason, the climactic ending sequence fell totally flat, and the movie just trickled away, rather than leaving something behind.

pearly gives this movie 5 out of 10.

  1. I think this film is well writing, well produced. The actors are amazing, especially Radha Mitchell. She's just a genius. Doing the baby face and at the same having this ambition totally desctructive. A great movie that makes you realize a lot of things about life. Not seein like a Dake movie but see the true message love who you love screw the gender of them!! Brilliant movie. Radha Mitchell just exquisite
