"Jokes aplenty" - a review by pearly

Mel Brooks delivers a comedic history lesson with History of the World: Part 1. The film takes us through from the dawn of man to the French revolution, with laughs being the main item on the agenda. And the jokes come in thick and fast.

This movie is somewhat reminiscent of Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) or Life of Brian (1979); quite possibly this noticeable likeness is due to all of these films having fun with historic events. There are some particularly memorable bits in History of the World: Part 1, for example, how the 15 commandments became 10, the many lewd jokes surrounding the vestal virgins of the Roman empire, and the repeated quote from King Louis XVI: "it's good to be king".

If you like your comedy a little rude and crude, and don't mind either religious humour or the kind of jokes your dad might make ("Don't get saucy with me, Bernaise!"), you'll laugh the whole way through this. The acting is over-the-top, the plot is simply a vessel to go from one joke to the next, and it was never meant to be anything but fun. Having a film called "Part 1" when there is no intention of having a part 2 is my kind of humour. Kick back and enjoy yourself.

pearly gives this movie 6 out of 10.
