"A Modern Day Musical" - a review by pearly

Hansel (John Cameron Mitchell) is a boy growing up with his mother in East Germany. The only thing that gets him through the day is listening to American music on the radio - he idolises people like Lou Reed and David Bowie. When American GI Luther mistakes him for a female, he offers to marry Hansel and get him out of East Germany. So Hansel assumes his mother's identity, and after a botched sex operation, he becomes Hedwig.

Most of the film is told through Hedwig's songs, which tell her tale of growing up and becoming what she is today. The film has been adapted from a stage play, and it shows. The costumes are over-the-top, and the actors direct most of their dialogue (and singing) straight to the camera. The action is interspersed (mainly in the first half) with animated sections that act as illustrations for Hedwig's songs. This is a clever trick which gives the viewer a bit of a break from watching Hedwig, as she is on screen for almost the entire film.

There is real emotion behind all the good looks and bravado of this film. And, given that Girls Against Boys lend a hand with the soundtrack, that's also a winner. Hedwig is something totally different, and while it won't appeal to everyone, it makes a nice change from the formulaic blockbusters out there.

pearly gives this movie 7 out of 10.
