"Not quite sure what it wants to be" - a review by pearly

Bree (Felicity Huffman) is a transsexual who is in the final stages of therapy on the road to having an operation to become a female. She learns that she has a son, Toby (Kevin Zegers), from a long time past encounter, and before she can continue on her journey, she must take a road trip across America to find this son, and come to terms with what he means in her life.

It is testament to Huffman's performance in this film that even though she is probably one of the four most famous women of the moment, jud didn't know who she was, nor whether she was in fact male or female. Huffman actually does an amazing job with this difficult role, and deserved the kudos she received for her portrayal of this character.

Unfortunately, the rest of the film doesn't altogether live up to this performance. It's a decent enough film, but it's a little fluffy around the edges, and some of the over-acted performances once Bree meets up with the rest of her family are a bit ridiculous, and don't really add anything to the authenticity of the film. It's almost as if the director wasn't sure whether he wanted to make a drama or a comedy, so he alternated between the two, which didn't give the film a very consistent feel.

Transamerica is best is when it is being dramatic with just a slight hint of the silly edge. The relationship between Bree and Toby is enough fodder for a storyline as is, and it doesn't really need to be beefed up with things like the discovery that Toby is pursuing a career in pornography.

With its flaws, Transamerica is still a pretty decent film. Better luck next time, Duncan Tucker.

If I won 12 Best Director Oscars but Jack Palance accidentally read out Marisa Tomei's name when I won 6 of those Best Director Oscars, how many Best Director Oscars did I actually take home?
