"Very sinematic" - a review by andy-j

Let's get this out of the way. Sin City has some serious style. Bucketloads of style to spare. It's made to look like a comic book, with plenty of cool effects and shots bandied about, all of which add an extra level of awesome to the film. Sin City has a great atmosphere. This wonderful approach is the big drawcard of Sin City, a film telling three loosely-connected tales from the seedy underbelly of this rotten, corrupted city.

Sin City is a well-cast and extremely well-acted film. It features actors such as Bruce Willis, Benicio Del Toro, and Mickey Rourke (who is amazing as the superhero-esque Marv). Where it falls over is in the story. It's just not interesting enough for me, relying far too much on every other element that makes it good. In the end, we have three fairly simple stories that have been told hundreds of times before. The stories are given the glossy treatment of great effects, wonderful atmosphere, amazing style, spot-on acting, and well-defined characters, in order to push them over the line. It just makes it, but I really got seriously bored at a couple of points, and almost gave up. The worst story was the middle one, where everything dragged horribly and fell completely flat.

I really was impressed by everything except for the story, which felt like it was along for the ride. I'm probably missing the bigger picture here. I know it's meant to be based on a comic book that is set in the middle of the century, and as such, the stories should reflect this period. However, I really didn't enjoy this nearly as much as I would have if it had had a fresher plot. This just goes to show that without the fundamentals, you can layer as much other stuff over the top of it, but, in the end, it doesn't make that much difference.

Anyway, top marks for everything but plot. Can't imagine giving it another viewing anytime soon though.

andy-j gives this movie 6 out of 10.
