"Rock-rock on" - a review by andy-j

Rock Fresh is a feature-length documentary on graffiti. It focuses not on the lifestyle or attitudes of everyday graffiti taggers, but purely on graffiti as an art style. It shows us people who have turned pro, whether they have been commissioned to create public pieces or have started their own business selling artwork or merchandise. It is an interesting angle, and, no doubt, one that needs exposure and recognition.

While I think the subject matter is a good one, and the angle an important one, the actual content is quite boring. Consider the history of graffiti, the lives of graffiti taggers, their motivations, aspirations, history. To me, this is interesting subject matter. But these areas are only given a small chunk of attention, with the bulk of the documentary focusing on professional artists. The characters are interesting enough, and hearing them talk about their passion and future plans is mildly engrossing. I was just expecting something different and I couldn't help but be disappointed. At times, Rock Fresh really dragged. It could probably have been edited better to keep the viewer's interest up.

So, like I said - it's good that this has been made. I suspect it's more for the hardcore though.

andy-j gives this movie 5 out of 10.

"All I can muster is a 'meh'" - a review by pearly

As an artform, graffiti isn't anywhere near the top of my all-time favourite art styles list. In fact, I think that, for the most part, it looks pretty ugly, even that stuff that some people think looks cool. But believe it or not, I didn't dismiss this documentary purely based on the fact that I'm not so keen on the artwork that the film is about.

Rock Fresh is about a bunch of guys whose passion is graffiti, and graf culture. They show off their styles, and we get a bit of insight into their greater lives.

Unfortunately, in this current day world where we're spoiled for choice with documentaries, Rock Fresh is fairly disappointing. The episode of Faking It that I saw where the art historian faked being a graffiti artist was more interesting, in my opinion.

pearly gives this movie 4 out of 10.

  1. what on earth gives you guys the impression that you have something worth sharing with the rest of us? Seriously. You guys think that being a movie critic is a pedestal from which to inflict your tastes and opinions on society. Please - show me some credentials, a cerificate, a diploma, a degree a license, a fucking day pass or something. Something that actually qualifies you to review stuff. something that shows you have been educated to appreciate skills, talent and quality - something that will make me pay attention to what you guys think - something please!

  2. for all the expertise you guys have, you'd have as much credibility writing reviews for Choice magazine as you have writing movie reviews i.e. none.
I'd be interested to hear what toilet paper you prefer - only because at least you have some experience in that field like the rest of us.

  3. As stated in my profile, I have no credentials, nor have I ever pretended to have any. I think this site makes that very clear. I'm just a member of the public who sees movies and comments on whether I like them or not. I hardly think that I'm on any kind of pedestal.

I'm also not "inflicting" my reviews upon you, or upon anyone else. If you don't like them, don't read them. Please don't take this so seriously. I don't.

    Thanks for the feedback.
