"An unexpected delight" - a review by pearly

I saw the previews for this. It looked really terrible. I decided I wouldn't bother to go and see it. I mean, aside from anything else, what do I care about Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer? I don't, right? But then, em_fiction started going on and on about how great it was. I couldn't shut him up. It was becoming annoying.

So, I went to see it. And... who knew? It was great.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is a self-referential film noir style dramedy (if that's not an already known genre - which I'm sure it is - I'm using it to mean a cross between drama and comedy). Downey Jr. plays Harry, a man who kinda sorta accidentally becomes involved in a murder mystery, involving Harmony Faith Lane (Michelle Monaghan), a woman he has long had a crush on. Harry is also our narrator. Along with private detective Gay Perry (Kilmer), he sets out to solve the mystery and win the woman.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is highly stylised, and it is in this that much of the interest of the film lays. The other fascinating aspect is the parody style; the monologues to camera, and the like. The structure of the story is interesting and fairly unique, and when all of this is added together, the film becomes a much better proposition than what it appears on the surface to be.

pearly gives this movie 7 out of 10.
