"Quelle crevette rose!" - a review by pearly

In Catch of the Day, a woman prone to daydreaming about a life that's better than the one she actually has, finds herself at work. It really is just another day for the woman, who works at the local fish shop, and is surrounded by customers for whom she has no respect. She gets herself through the day by imagining the people that she does not like as sea creatures, and via animation, we see these people become the insulting nicknames for which she has named them.

Catch of the Day, made in the same year as Deep Dive (1990), contains quite a different style of animation. Possibly due to it being a fair bit lengthier, the film contains less movement, with only the essential items being animated, and the backgrounds remaining still. The style is still drawn, and interestingly, throughout the film, there are French subtitles for all of the English language dialogue. I am not sure whether this is intentional for even non-French speaking audiences, but it did add a little (perhaps unintentionally) to the humour of the woman's inner monologue.

I found that, overall, whilst this was a fairly enjoyable film and a creative idea, it was a little too long to sustain my interest throughout. It also seemed a little jumpy - the beginning had barely anything to do with the latter two thirds of the film where the woman was working in the fish shop, and perhaps it would have been better to cut this section down, but more likely, it was the latter part that needed a bit of a trim, as this was the part that seemed to drag on a bit much.

pearly gives this movie 7 out of 10.
