"Huh?" - a review by pearly

Napoleon Dynamite is like a teeny tiny little borer who has found his way into your favourite antique dresser and is burrowing through the wood, slowly but surely. It's the perfect metaphor, except for the whole destructive nature of those insects bit. Other than that, though, that seems to be the way that this film has been slowly coursing into the consciousness of the general public. From person to person it spreads, leaving a series of quotables in its wake.

How do you possibly describe this film? It's kind of in the vein of a Christopher Guest film, maybe like Waiting for Guffman (1996), in that it's almost a mockumentary style. However, it's not exactly like those films, and, in my opinion (on first viewing at least), it isn't as funny - the big problem being that really its only aim is to be funny.

I know of people who have been mighty confused the first time they watched a Guest film (whereas I just kinda "got it" straight away), and this is probably the same way that I felt watching Napoleon Dynamite for the first time (and, thus far, only time). I spent most of the duration with a rather furrowed brow, thinking to myself "what on earth is all this about?". I don't even know whether I appreciated it enough to consider ever watching it again, even with the purpose of trying to figure out what all the fuss is about. No, unfortunately (for me), I don't really "get" Napoleon Dynamite.

The basic premise of the film is just a jumbled-together series of the various exploits of a rather dorky high school kid named Napoleon (Jon Heder), who is on somewhat of a quest for popularity. Along for the ride are his supremely weird family, odd friend(s), and whoever else he bumps into. The plot is mainly a set of excuses to move from one whacky situation to the next, and really isn't the point of the thing though.

Listen, there's probably lots of reasons why Napoleon Dynamite has become the "cult classic" that it has. It's just that I can't figure out what any of them are.

pearly gives this movie 5 out of 10.
