"Film Full of Power" - a review by pearly

Maria Full of Grace tells the story of a young Colombian woman who, sick of her job dethorning roses, but too poor to go without work, falls into a job transporting pellets of heroin to New York in her stomach. Throughout the course of the film, the story attempts to show the relative innocence of the mules themselves, and how they are in reality just pawns in a complex game which they do not really understand.

In her first feature film role, for which she was nominated for an Oscar, Catalina Sandino Moreno stars as Maria. She really is brilliant, giving the role the kind of characteristics required to make the audience able to sympathise with her through everything that she goes through.

Watching this film, I found that you were really able to begin to put yourself into the shoes of someone in this situation - however, in the second half of the film, it began to get a little more convoluted, and I felt that the film suffered a little for it. Having said that, though, Maria Full of Grace is still a very intriguing and attention-capturing film, and its ending brings the whole thing back around from over-the-top territory back into the more realistic, yet fascinating realm. Worth a look.

pearly gives this movie 8 out of 10.
