"A sign of things to come" - a review by pearly

Luo Yusheng (Honglei Sun) has arrived home for the first time in many years, to find his grieving mother Zhao Di (Yulian Zhao) distraught over the death of her husband, Luo's father. As Luo attempts to calm his mother and discover the reasons why she wants her husband to have a traditional style funeral, we are taken to the old couple's past, and told, in flashback, the story of how the two met.

This story of the young Zhao Di (Ziyi Zhang) and her husband to be (Hao Zheng) becomes the focus of the film, to the point where you are so engrossed in it, that you forget where you've begun, and that you know the outcome of the story you're seeing play out on screen. This is the power of director Yimou Zhang, who came to prominence with this relatively early film of his, and not the last of his collaborations with the beautiful (and very young at the time of filming this) Ziyi.

Besides the immersement in the story though, the other superb thing about this film is the portrayals of the characters, in particular, the young lovers, but also of note is the relationship between the young Zhao Di and her mother (Bin Li), which is priceless. The Road Home is a beautiful and heartbreaking romance, and a sign of things to come for both its director, and the radiant Ziyi.

pearly gives this movie 8 out of 10.
