"This is not for me" - a review by pearly

There's something about the darkness of an Asian horror flick, its whole ambience, that makes it inherently scarier. Probably especially so if you've grown up being scared by things that are displayed in a more literal way. A Tale of Two Sisters contains these elements, and there are definitely scary moments delivered on screen. Unfortunately, it falls a little flat for me - quite possibly simply because the horror genre is not nearly my favourite, though there are probably other reasons.

In this film, a father (Kap-su Kim) brings his family to a big old countryside house to live, following the death of his wife, something which presumably happened some time ago. He has found a new wife (Jung-ah Yum), and though he hopes to settle down to a newer and happier life with her, he finds that, in particular, his steadfast daughter (Su-jeong Lim) is not at all fond of her new stepmother, and does everything possible to make life uneasy for all involved.

But there is, of course, more to this story than is at first let on. There are many possible comparisons to be drawn between this film, and any number of suspense / horrors coming out of Hollywood in the last few years (though to state the comparisons would most definitely count as a spoiler, so you'll just have to figure it out for yourself). I thought that the film was quite cleverly structured, though I did find it a little hard to follow at times (possibly just lost in translation).

Unfortunately though, I didn't love A Tale of Two Sisters. I found the whole premise to be a little overdone, and even though they managed to pull this one off probably a little better than others similar, I'm just not into the concept enough to really get excited over it in a major way. Oh well.

pearly gives this movie 4 out of 10.

  1. Unfortunatly the reviewer 'pearly' hasn't quite grasped the basic storyline (i.e most of those facts are incorrect). Put simply I think this film is a masterpiece. Please check out amazon.com for the reviews and also the Internet Movie Database (where critics and Asian horror fans alike have given this film a BIG thumbs-up!
I won't waste your time banging on about how good this film is, a second or even a third viewing is strongly recommended to appreciate the full story.
Many people (including myself) rate this film higher than the Ring.
I urge you watch this - or at least check out the hundreds of people who have reviewed it on IMDB/ amazon etc

  2. As I indicated in my review ("But there is, of course, more to this story than is at first let on."), I was trying to describe the basic storyline of the film without giving away any of the twists contained within. I don't think it's right to say that I didn't grasp the storyline - I grasped it perfectly fine, I just didn't want to write a review that was full of spoilers.

Having seen the film, I am sure that you can understand what I am saying.

I personally preferred Ringu to this, however, I admit that horrors are not amongst my favourite genre. Anyone who enjoys horrors is certain to enjoy this film more than I did. One reviewer's opinion and all that.
