"South Pacific Corman" - a review by timchumaA botched arms robbery on an island in the South Pacific leads to Lee and his brother Chris having to run from the law. In a storm they are wrecked on a reef of the island of Vanakai and rescued by the lovely Mahia.
It turns out everything on the island is owned by ‘The Island Company’ and the women collect pearls for sale. Their authoritarian leader, Puha, tells them that they boat is due in ten days and they just have to wait.
As their clothes are torn up they are given Lap Laps to wear that barely cover their laps. I don't know about anyone else, but this was really distracting for me as I expected their balls to pop out of them at any minute.
During a Hula dance to tell the story of their arrival, Mahia asks Chris to dance. While he is dancing he accidentally breaks the lei and all the women run away (it is taboo to do this, something I didn't know).
The rest of the movie goes on to follow the increasingly suspicious Puha (she's really annoying) and Chris and Lee's attempts to escape.
I had seen a few of Roger Corman's movies before and know his reputation as a trash filmmaker. This was a bit different as it was not so over the top. It also looks like it was filmed on location on an actual Pacific island (it must have been such a trial for the crew). |
