"A pure joy" - a review by timchuma

Little Johnny is playing spaceman while his sister nags him to play house. They meet two archaeologists working in a cave and then are told off by their mother who comes to get them.

They are having a picnic with their mother and older sister and have a nap after eating. Johnny wakes up while everyone is sleeping and goes exploring on his own, only to be almost killed by a meteor.

Completely inexplicably, there is a fight between two giant monsters (actually a baby alligator and a gila monster with extra fins stuck on) and we are introduced to Ro-Man the invader who has destroyed almost the entire population of the earth.

Even if you haven't seen this movie you would know that the main monster is composed of a big gorilla body with a space helmet for a head. The monster talks like every super-intelligent space alien you could imagine.

The story is not really that important with this movie, as it is the settings and characters that make it so fun to watch. I can see how this movie, and others like it, influenced movies such as The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra (2001) and many other people who saw it when they were younger.

Probably my favourite thing about the movie, apart from the characters, is the high-tech equipment that Ro-Man uses (actually a ‘Billion Bubbles Machine’) and a leftover interocitor from another movie. Little Johnny has one of the best lines — “You look like a pooped out pinwheel!’ It looks like everyone was taking it seriously, but the actress playing Alice seems to be struggling not to laugh when she is kidnapped by Ro-Man which is another thing which makes this movie great.

If you haven't seen this movie, I would recommend watching it if it comes on TV or you see it for sale on DVD. (I got it as part of a 50 movie box set).

timchuma gives this movie 8 out of 10.

If I won 12 Best Supporting Actress Oscars but Jack Palance accidentally read out Marisa Tomei's name when I won 3 of those Best Supporting Actress Oscars, how many Best Supporting Actress Oscars did I actually take home?
