"This movie has a bit of everything in it" - a review by timchuma

Yun-Fat Chow stars as the God of Gamblers who is living quietly in France with his pregnant wife when his life is destroyed by an insane rival who wants to gamble with him.

His dying wife makes him promise that he won't gamble or say that he was God of Gamblers for a year so that he won't rush off trying to get revenge.

Almost a year later GoG is on holiday in rural China when he meets a gang boss from Taiwan who is on holiday with his family. Later on a boat cruise they are attacked and the dying gang boss makes him promise to take his son back to Taiwan.

The kid doesn't like him and they get on poorly. They are taken in for questioning by the Captain of the local People's Army (who looked a bit familiar for some reason). For some reason everyone laughed when the "Hong Kong reporters" were beaten up by the soldiers.

After the two escape they end up in an Inn that is run by three smugglers from Hong Kong who rip everyone off by having a fake police raid. When the real police turn up they are forced to run away together, but not before setting up a load of gas bottles to blow up the place they are fired upon.

The action gets a lot more fast and confusing and starts changing genres casually during the course of the film. I liked how the film went through action, drama, road movie, romance, comedy and back to drama at the end.

Some of the other highlights of this film include the "mind reading" bloke who can change playing cards and the high-kicking Blackjack game by the young boy's sister. The final game between God of Gamblers and the bad guy is also excellent.

I would recommend this film to people who want to see a gambling film, but want some variety thrown in with it.

timchuma gives this movie 8 out of 10.
