"Fanningtastic" - a review by pearly

Sometimes, you're in just the right mood for a silly drama / comedy. The night I watched Uptown Girls was just one of these nights. The film is essentially a big bit of fluff stuck in the pocket of all the other more serious films out there, but it's a nice looking piece of fluff.

There's Molly (Brittany Murphy). She's been living off her parent's inheritance money and living it up for about as long as she can remember. Her father was a rock star whose crowning moment was a song written for her. But then her money is cut off, and she has to find herself a job for the first time in her life. This is where Ray (Dakota Fanning) comes in. Ray's mum Roma (Heather Locklear) is a busy record producer who doesn't have much time for Ray. Ray has overcompensated by growing up too fast, and she doesn't allow herself to have any fun, because she's scared that if she lets go, she'll start to feel her sadness.

And so it happens that Molly becomes Ray's nanny, the latest in a long line. The pair make an odd match, and they get along like chocolate and cheese to begin with, but, this being Hollywood, we don't have to worry too much about that sugary ending, but rather, just wait for it to come along.

The film is ridiculously formulaic and just the kind of thing that would make me turn up my nose. I'm sure many people have done just that. But I didn't. A few things about it made me enjoy it. Firstly, Dakota Fanning. This girl is a little genius, and I hope she doesn't lose her touch as she gets older. She's been in only one really great film that I've seen (unless you count the fact that she voiced one of the characters in the English language of My Neighbor Totoro (1988), but I don't), but she's managed to up the rating of another couple by a few points. As far as child actors go, I can't think of a single better one than Fanning.

Secondly, there's a pet pig in the movie, and I love pigs. If you wanna make a film which I will rate highly, just add a pig somewhere, and I'm bound to love it.

Lastly, and much less importantly, it's got Jesse Spencer in it. Jesse Spencer! Billy from Neighbours! Playing a serious role in a Hollywood film, opposite Brittany Murphy. Too funny. The role requires him to sing and play guitar (he even appears on the soundtrack) too, which is quite classic. I knew he was heading off to try his luck, but I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw him in this.

So, in summary, yes, this is a fairly unimportant piece of work, and one that'll be essentially forgotten by most everyone in about ten minutes. But there was a little more going on under the surface, and with some great performances, I really enjoyed it. Fun, frivolous times.

pearly gives this movie 7 out of 10.

  1. Uptown girls is about a rich young woman in her twenties who must take a job after she loses her fortune.
The acting was great. Dakota Fanning shone in this movie, and I think she really showed the world what she was made of.
I rated this movie nine out of ten because of Brittany Murphy. She was a little sloppy in this movie, and there were a few odd scenes, but all in all, I think this movie was a very funny movie and is worth seeing
