"A classic prison story" - a review by timchumaI have seen this movie heaps of times on SBS TV so I won't go into the plot that much. The storyline is fairly familiar to most moviegoers about a new inmate who is taken under the wing of an older inmate so he won't get beaten up as much (sort of like The Shawshank Redemption (1994)).
What makes this movie special are the characters and the performances from Yun-Fat Chow and especially the prison warden "Scarface" (Roy Cheung) who really evils it up.
My favourite parts in this movie are when the two first talk to each other in the hospital toilet and the punishment they are given by the warden for trying to show him up (cleaning out the septic tank) - seeing Yun-Fat Chow with smokes up his nose is a crack-up.
For those that are interested, there is a sequel (Prison on Fire II (1991)), but it isn't as good. I would also recommend Chinese Midnight Express 2 (1999) if you want something more realistic. |
