"Not entirely for me" - a review by pearly

Akira is a sci-fi animated film set in futuristic Tokyo. The members of a slightly rebellious, but basically good-hearted motorbike gang are torn apart when one of them is chosen for a secret government project. In order to save Tetsuo (Nozomu Sasaki) from this unknown, and to find out what's really going on, Kaneda (Mitsuo Iwata) must navigate his way through the city, which is becoming a war zone, and into restricted areas by devious means.

Akira is a classic of its genre, loved by many worldwide. It's action-packed, and exudes the same kinda cool that you used to get from watching Astro Boy when you were little. The plot gets a little confusing at times (it's difficult to keep track of the characters on the first run through), because there's always lots going on. However, it makes it hard to get bored, even though this is not exactly my cup of tea (it's really more of a boy film).

Some of the concepts of the Tokyo of the future (Neo-Tokyo) were kinda interesting, but the main plot about the supernatural powers of Tetsuo, and how these fitted in with the government project didn't tickle my fancy quite enough for me to really get into the film. I did enjoy the music though.

pearly gives this movie 6 out of 10.

  1. Having read two (of six) of the thick volumes of Manga that made up the original Akira story, it is no wonder it is very confusing.

They must have had a really hard time to compress so much story into such a short running time.

  2. It was a great trip into an altered future of motor bikes and psychics.
