"Just a drop in the long-distant ocean" - a review by pearly

Cunnamulla is a documentary about a small township in the middle of nowhere, way out west of Brisbane, in Queensland. There isn't much to do in Cunnamulla, so, director Dennis O'Rourke would have us believe, the young residents spend their time drinking, listening to evil music, and having sex.

The documentary, or its director, have been criticised for what some see as exploitation of its subjects, particularly two teenage girls who talk openly about their escapades. From my perspective, the criticisms are partially valid - I do believe that the stories that O'Rourke presents in the documentary are true, but I doubt that this is a very holistic view of the town, and it therefore becomes a little misleading.

The film is essentially a character study, with O'Rourke being a fly on the wall as his subjects offer up insights into what their lives are like, and we see a little of the interactions between these people. There is nothing specifically here that warmed me to the film, and made me think that it was anything particularly special. Cunnamulla isn't boring or terrible, but it's not spectacular either.

pearly gives this movie 5 out of 10.
